Introduction
First, I analyzed the data, and I tried to come up with different questions that the data could answer. I decided to create a visualization highlighting which days of the year are most common for finding moose and wolves. However, the wolf sightings were listed in a different data format, which made it challenging to sort. So, I decided to only focus on the moose data and cleaned out the wolf numbers. There is still significant data for only the moose. There were over 26,000 sightings ranging from 1943 to 2023. Unfortunately, after viewing a bar graph with dates on the x-axis and counting on the y-axis, I realized there were too many dates on the x-axis, and it was impossible to read it. I made the visualizations using Rawgraphs.io. Then, I decided to narrow down the dates to only the month. I used the function in google sheets =text(A1, “m”) to only showcase the month. I found the data easy to read and think that moose sighters can employ this data for their moose adventures. The numbers on the x axis correspond to the month of the year and the y axis is the number of moose sightings.
Presentation and Significance
This data is necessary for moose enthusiasts who want to find moose. From the graph, we can easily see which time of the year the moose are out and about. In June, there were the most moose sightings, with nearly 5,000. Nearly 1/5th of the total sightings happened in June. Still, in the months leading up to June and immediately following, there are still a very high number of moose sightings. In fact, in May to August, nearly 66% of moose sightings occur, even though that span is only ⅓ of the year. On the other hand, there were noticeably less moose sightings in January, February, November, December. This visualization is a great and easily understandable display showing the difference in moose sightings by month. It relates to digital arts and humanities because there is so much data in digital humanities, so using visualizations that can present the numbers in an easy way to tell the story is vital.
On the website, I used one of the given templates on wordpress to customize it to my liking. I embedded my graph from Rawgraphs.io.
